Getting your first kitten is a pretty big deal! One day, you're picking out cute little toys and imagining all the cuddles you'll share. The next, you're wondering why your new furry roommate is sprinting across your face at four in the morning. Welcome to cat pawrenthood, where every day brings another adorable surprise and approximately a million questions.

This four-month-old tortoiseshell kitten is giving us a purrfect example of what life with a new feline friend can look like. She's been with her family for just over a month, and her human is already completely smitten. After losing a beloved dog last year, they're especially determined to make sure their new little companion has everything she needs.

Naturally, that comes with a few worries. Is she growing properly? Eating enough? Behaving like a typical kitten? At around 15 to 17 weeks old, this little tortie weighs 2.1 kilograms and recently experienced a growth spurt. Thankfully, her vet says she's doing great.

For anyone welcoming their first kitten, keeping up with veterinary appointments is a great place to start. Your vet can help you understand your kitten's growth, nutritional needs, vaccinations, and other important milestones. There's no need to become an overnight expert on everything feline!

Getting familiar with your kitty's personality is another big part of the adventure. This tortie loves slow blinks, nose bumps, and licking her human's hands. She also enjoys sleeping belly-up beside her favorite person, although she occasionally prefers stealing the gaming chair.

Then there are the zoomies. Oh, the zoomies! This little lady apparently believes 4 a.m. is an excellent time to race around the house, investigate everyone's faces, and attempt to lick the PS5 controller. First-time pawrents might be surprised by just how much energy fits inside such a tiny fluffball.

Interactive play sessions, scratching posts, and plenty of appropriate toys can help keep curious kittens entertained. It's also worth kitten-proofing your home, because those little paws have a talent for finding things they shouldn't.

Most importantly, remember that every cat has their own quirks. Learning what your kitten enjoys, recognizing their routines, and asking your veterinarian questions when something seems off are all part of becoming a confident cat pawrent.

You don't need to have everything figured out immediately. Just enjoy getting to know your new furry bestie, one nose boop and midnight zoomie at a time!

Cats feel just as strongly as we do, especially when faced with major life-altering events.

I don't know this cat or the family who adopted her, but when I saw this story, I felt it deep within my core. I've been a mother for a little over a year now. Since the moment she was born, my daughter has been my entire world. My life was full and colorful before she came along, but oh boy has it become so much more vast and saturated since she's here. I can't describe becoming a parent in words; it's an indescribable experience for someone who hasn't experienced it yet. But the thing is that, together with all of these amazing new feelings, another thing entered my life the literal second I saw my daughter's tiny face for the first time in the delivery room - a fear that something will happen to her.

This fear is also indescribable. I can't fathom, I can't even begin to imagine a scenario in which something bad happens to my daughter. It's something I guess I will eternally fear until the end of life. I don't care about my fear of bugs anymore - the fear of losing my daughter makes my stomach turn. And this is why I felt so strongly when I learned about Callie the cat - this fear became a reality for her. She was a mama cat, but she lost her kittens. I can't even begin to imagine what she was going through. It's too awful to think about.

But because this life-changing event is so awful for cats just as much as it's awful for humans, I'd expect the shelter workers who cared for her to give her all the support she needed in such a hard time. But she became aggressive… so they put her on the euthanasia list. I'm honestly dumbfounded to learn that. It makes me want to go feral as well. If I were in this cat's paws I would absolutely go ballistic if something happened to my daughter. How could they not see it? How could her grief not have been met with compassion?

These are questions we might never get answers to… But she's no longer there, because she met a happier ending.

The Cat Distribution System works in meowsterious ways, and for one traveler, all it took was a smoke break at Chicago's O'Hare Airport and a missed connecting flight to turn his unexpected delay into an even more unexpected adoption.

Depending on where you're going to (or where you're coming from), traveling with pets can be an enormous hassle. You need an airline-approved pet carrier, usually some sort of documentation and medical history for the animal, and a lot of patience. If the animal is small enough to come with you in the cabin, that's the best option, but if not, they have to fly underneath the plane in the cargo section, which comes with its own potential problems. This process can take anywhere from weeks to months. Now, imagine having to do it all in a few hours before your flight!

After missing his connecting flight at Chicago's O'Hare airport, Virgil Wiebe went outside for a smoke break. He found a small garden and started contemplating what to do with his remaining time before his next flight, when all of a sudden, he heard some tiny, distressed meows coming from somewhere around him. Then, out popped a tiny, 3-week-old orange kitten, all alone. Virgil searched for a mama cat, but alas, the poor kitty was flying solo (pun intended).

Well, what would any rational purrson do when finding an abandoned kitten with only a few hours until their next flight? Obviously, he couldn't just leave the kitten there, so he Door Dashed an airline pet carrier and kitten formula, got everything settled with United Airlines and booked one more ticket for his tiny, fluffy passenger, who he named Macanudo O'Hare, or Harry, for short. His layover/kitten rescue mission was now complete.

Travelers, if you thought that the Cat Distribution System couldn't reach you at the airport, think again! The CDS is all-knowing, all-powerful, and even if you're about to board your plane, you might just be expected to take a seriously smol (and seriously cute) rescue cat with you.

Who else is in desperate need of meowtivation to get through this new week? I sure am, and those feline funnies to put me in a good mood are not going to show up by themselves. 

The week is barely starting, and I don't know about you, but I already miss the weekend. My bed and warm blanket are sitting there alone, calling fo me to come back and sleep all day and do absolutely nothing. 

If anybody had told us that being adults was this tiring, we would have all escaped to Neverland with Peter Pan and The Lost Boys to make sure we never had the need to know what taxes were. We don't want to go to work; we don't want to do the laundry; we don't want to know how much we're paying for rent, and we wish we could ignore our bills because money grows on trees. Funny story: when my brother was a kid, he wanted to plant a money tree. He also wanted to plant a tree that grew bread, because he saw the sesame seeds that are sometimes put on top of bagels and he thought that that's where bread came from. He apparently had issues with trees back then, but he got over it, thankfully. We still make fun of him for that, so at least we're left with a good source of entertainment. 

Anyway, back to adulthood. Our weeks are long, and we need a way to let everything go so we can keep being the adults that we are. Who needs a babysitter when your baby has a furry best friend watching over them?

I never imagined how soft and gentle cats can be around babies. It's like they know tiny humans need more care and compassion, so they give it. And for babies, cats look like little, soft creatures, and it's awesome to watch their connection grow and how much they learn to coexist and behave. Honestly, having the chance to see a baby and an animal together is wonderful. Felines tend to be more independent and don't really care what's going on inside the home… but as soon as a baby enters the house, they drop their attitude and become their full-time babysitter. 

Now they follow the parents from room to room to make sure the baby is cared for properly and to protect them if something goes wrong. Cats suddenly decide to snuggle in cribs and let that baby touch and squeeze them, and they don't really mind… The friendship between a cat and a baby is one of the most wholesome ones, and worth appreciating.
